Nutrition
We eat for performance first. These 2 diets will help you achieve that. As we improve our performance, body composition goals (losing weight, increasing muscle mass) will follow. If changing your body composition is your primary goal, I would lean more towards you doing the zone diet.
You have 3 options for eating:
1. Zone Diet
Use the Zone Diet Guide (.pdf) as your quickstart. If you want to pick up one of the books, I recommend Mastering the Zone, which you can find on Amazon for $4.00 w/ shipping. There are a ton of Zone recipe books out there, as well as numerous websites. Just google "zone diet" for more info.
2. Paleolithic Diet
The "eat like a caveman" diet. You can go to wikipedia or Dr. Cordain's website for more info. Basically, your protein is coming from lean animal sources, your carbohydrate intake is coming from fruits and veggies, and your fats are coming from nuts/seed/vegetable oils. No processed anything.
3. If you are unwilling to adopt one of the previous 2 eating plans, then change your goals. If you are unwilling to change your eating habits, then you are not willing to do what it takes to increase your performance and change your body composition. If that is OK w/ you, then that is OK w/ me (not really, but I'll just say that for now).
If you are serious about making a positive change in your body and performance, I will need you to fill out a weekly food log and email/fax/submit it in writing. This is no joke. I need that thing filled out completely every week. If I don't get it, I will assume you are following eating plan #3.
Adopting one of the 2 eating plans above will require you to plan ahead and cook for yourself. I've heard a lot of excuses about why you can't do this and they all are terrible. If this is important to you, then you will find a way to make this work. Here is a guide to shopping and eating/cooking. There are some recommendations about specific stores to go to that aren't applicable since we are on the east coast, but you'll get the idea.
I pulled the last 2 documents from Rob Wolf's blog, which is an excellent site for paleo/zone info and discussion. Check this page for those 2 docs as well as 2 others with sample recipes.
This page will evolve as I put more time into it and get more feedback from everybody. Initial plans are to start posting recipes and such but we'll see how that goes.
